Intended use:
RIDA®STAMP Staph is an agar for the detection of Staphylococcus aureus as well as other Staphylococci on surfaces. The RIDA®STAMP plates consist of a special 10 cm2 petri dish containing organism specific agar which is protruding above the surface of the plate in order to allow direct contact with the selected flat surface or solid food sample.
Regular sampling on cleaned and sanitised surfaces will lead to a complete quantitative hygiene monitoring process. Repeated controls will play a part in contributing to good workplace hygiene according to the concept of HACCP and support GMP guidelines.
General Information:
Staphylococci are characterized as a genus of Gram-positive, ball shaped bacteria which can be observed as mostly grape-like clustered organisms under the microscope. Cells are sized between 0.8 and 1.2 µm, non-motile and do not form any kind of spores. The most commonly known member of the genus is S. aureus which is a known natural bacterium of humans as well as other Staphylococci (e.g. S. epidermidis). Nevertheless S. aureus is also known (various pathogenic strains) as the cause of life threating diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, endocarditis, or toxic shock syndrome (TSS).
Staphylococci are airborne and settle on the surfaces of food stuffs as well as on working tools in the production environment. Therefore, contamination is always due to poor general hygiene in the production process. Monitoring of Staphylococci counts after cleaning and disinfection enables the detection of incorrect operation with internal sanitation plans.
On RIDA®STAMP Staph, Staphylococcus aureus forms round yellow/cream coloured colonies surrounded by yellow halos. Due to a positive egg yolk reaction, white turbidity is developed inside the medium around the colonies while the surface has pearly luster.
Other Staphylococci form small, round and white colonies showing no colour changes. Possible halos may occur in reddish color. No positive egg yolk reaction will be observed.
