Marine Biotoxins

The number of toxin-producing algae is increasing and this has led to higher levels of so-called marine biotoxins (phycotoxins). The intake of such toxins by mussels and other marine animals is therefore also on the increase.

There are three different types: PSP (paralytic shellfish poisoning), DSP (diarrhetic shellfish poison) and ASP (amnestic shellfish poison). The consumption of toxin-contaminated food can lead to serious health problems that can be recognised by the following symptoms: damaged nervous system, damaged digestive system and memory loss. Toxin-contaminated mussels can be found worldwide and are especially common during the months of May to August. Their numbers decrease during the winter season.

EuroProxima Domoic Acid (ASP)

Art. No.: 5191DOMO

Intended use:

A competitive enzyme immunoassay for quantitative analysis of domoic acid in scallop, mussel and oyster samples.

General information:

High concentrations of shellfish toxins can accumulate in filter feeders such as clams, mussels, and oysters causing illness amongst people who eat them. There are four syndromes called shellfish poisoning, i.e paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP), neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP), diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) and amnesic shellfish poisoning (ASP). ASP is caused by domoic acid (DA), an excitatory amino acid containing the structure of glutamic acid and resembling kainic acid. In the European Union, Regulation (EC) no 853/2004 stipulates that live bivalve mollusks must not contain DA in total quantity (measured in the whole body or any part edible separately) that exceeds a limit of 20 mg DA per kilogram.

The Domoic acid ELISA is a competitive enzyme immunoassay based on antibodies directed against domoic acid.

EuroProxima Okadaic Acid (DSP)

Art. No.: 5191OKA

Intended use:

A competitive enzyme immunoassay for quantitative analysis of okadaic acid in scallop, mussel and oyster samples.

DSP is primarily caused by the polyether toxin okadaic acid (OA) and several analogues of OA, among which the dinophysistoxins DTX1, DTX2, and DTX3.
In the European Union, Regulation (EC) no 853/2004 stipulates that live bivalve mollusks must not contain OA in total quantity (measured in the whole body or any part edible separately) that exceeds a limit of 160 μg OA equivalents (OA, dinophysistoxins, and pectenotoxins together) per kilogram.

The Okadaic Acid ELISA is a competitive enzyme immunoassay based on antibodies directed against okadaic acid.

EuroProxima Saxitoxin (PSP)

Art. No.: 5191SAXI

Intended use:

A competitive enzyme immunoassay for quantitative analysis of saxitoxin in scallop, mussel and oyster samples.

PSP is caused by a wide number of derivatives of saxitoxin (STX).
In the European Union, Regulation (EC) no 853/2004 stipulates that live bivalve mollusks must not contain PSP toxins (saxitoxin and analogues) in total quantity (measured in the whole body or any part edible separately) that exceeds a limit of 800 μg per kilogram.

The Saxitoxin ELISA is a competitive enzyme immunoassay based on antibodies directed against saxitoxin.
