Trichothecenes
General information on trichothecene testing
The trichothecenes are a very large family of chemically related mycotoxins produced by molds like Fusarium, Trichoderma, Trichothecium and others. The trichothecenes are divided into two groups: macrocyclic and non-macrocyclic. T-2 is in the non-macrocyclic group, this group is also subdivided into the Type A and Type B trichothecenes. The Type A trichothecenes include T-2, HT-2, Neosolaniol and DAS as mycotoxin components, type B trichothecenes include DON, 3.acetyl- and 15 acetyl-DON, Nivalenol and Fusarenon-X.
Corn, wheat, barley, oats, rice, rye and other crops have been reported to contain trichothecenes. Natural occurrence has been reported in Asia, Africa, South America, Europe, and North America. Natural levels range from near zero to 10 ppm with a few exceptions showing levels of 15-40 ppm. The toxin production is greatest with increased humidity and temperatures of 6-24 °C.
The major toxic attribute of the trichothecenes is that they inhibit protein synthesis. It affects the actively dividing cells such as those lining the gastrointestinal tract, skin, lymphoid, and erythroid cells. The effects on animals include weight loss or poor weight gain, bloody diarrhea, dermal necrosis or beak lesions and decreased production (weight gain, eggs, milk, etc.). Type A trichothecenes are more toxic to poultry species than the Type B trichothecenes.
Trichothecene testsystems from R-Biopharm
Due to the relative large number of different structures common methods to analyze trichothecenes are GC or LC-MS methods. For this we offer different types of clean-up tools as well as standards and reference materials.
For the individual trichothecenes like DON and T-2 toxin we offer specific testsystems.
