Intended use:
RIDASCREEN® Enro-/Ciprofloxacin is a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of enrofloxacin and its active metabolite ciprofloxacin in milk (raw milk, fresh milk and UHT milk) and milk powder (skim milk powder and whole milk powder).
General Information:
The mechanism of action of fluoroquinolones is based on the inhibition of gyrase, an enzyme essential to bacterial DNA synthesis. Thus, fluoroquinolones have very high efficacy against most gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria and are widely used in veterinary medicine to treat cattle, pigs, and poultry.
The use of fluoroquinolones has increased in recent years to prevent infectious diseases from occurring during livestock production. Particularly in the group of fluoroquinolones, the development of resistance was found to be associated mostly with E. coli.
Therefore, in the European Union, maximum residue limits (MRL) apply to some substances of this group, as described in COMMISSION REGULATION (EU) No. 37/2010. One representative of this group approved in human and veterinary medicine is enrofloxacin (metabolite: ciprofloxacin). The MRL for the sum of enrofloxacin and ciprofloxacin in milk (cow, sheep, or goat) is 100 µg/kg (ppb).
